3. Flying Buttress


The flying buttress is a specific type of buttress because it is outside of the building (seen in the picture above) and it bridges the gap between the wall (flyer) and the buttress itself. This type of architecture can also be seen in the Byzantine period. Using this structure meant the walls could be made lighter and utilized for stained glass windows. The flying buttress can also be used to "lean" against a wall that is vulnerable to destruction.
