Gothic Architecture: Generalities

Although we are not building these types of architectures anymore, we can see the influences the Gothic style has had on the various types of buildings and houses we see. But the buildings we can see that have wholly been shaped by the Gothic period are the cathedrals, which can be seen all across Europe.
The Gothic Period will always be one of my favorite periods because it produced a variety of innovative structures.

3. Flying Buttress

The flying buttress is a specific type of buttress because it is outside of the building (seen in the picture above) and it bridges the gap between the wall (flyer) and the buttress itself. This type of architecture can also be seen in the Byzantine period. Using this structure meant the walls could be made lighter and utilized for stained glass windows. The flying buttress can also be used to "lean" against a wall that is vulnerable to destruction.

2.Rib Vault

This is one my favorite types of architecture used in Gothic style; the ribbed vault is made by the crossing of multiple barrel vaults. This architecture led to more windows being used higher up in the building as well as more space above for "visiting saints and angels". This was also used for the support of a Gothic building.

1. The Pointed Arch

The pointed arch is most famously seen in Gothic Architecture but it can also be seen in Islamic Architecture as well! It is usually narrow, pointed, slanted,or curved with a mixture of the four. The arch was used in order to support the framework and pressure of the structure. The innovation of the pointed arch allowed for the spaces more elevated and more intimately spaced. This also produced a decrease of thrust to the base.
